Urban-Scale Physics-Based Building Energy Modeling

This project creates energy models for over 300,000 buildings in New York to evaluate their energy performance and predict how their energy consumption will be affected by climate change by the year 2099. The outcomes are used to better understand future electricity loads in the building sector and evaluate the most effective energy conservation measures.

Building Energy Modeling in 3D-Printed Buildings

This project focuses on facilitating and improving the energy performance modeling and simulation process in 3D-printed buildings. Such buildings are designed and built through a more automated process that enables integrating energy evaluation into the design process.

Multi-functional Sensors in Data-Driven Building Energy Modeling Using Machine Learning Techniques

In this project, multiple environmental data are collected using multi-functional sensors developed at the Integrated Medical Systems (IMS) Laboratory at the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, NYIT, Old Westbury. The data include temperature, humidity, heating & cooling system activity, radiations, doors, and windows open/close status, and occupancy. Machine learning techniques are applied to predict energy-related data such as occupancy profiles or the indoor air temperature.

This building is located at NYIT's Old Westbury campus. In this project, different types of building data are collected using energy audit tools in order to develop an energy model. The geometry, space properties, thermal zones, material properties, and construction layers are modeled in Revit, and they are transferred to OpenStudio through a BIM file (i.e., gbXML file). Modeling the HVAC system is one of the biggest challenges, where a central four-pipe system serves two other buildings. We are trying to achieve the following goals:

  • Calibrate the model using sensitivity analysis

  • Find an optimum energy retrofit design to achieve a zero-net-energy (ZNE) building

  • Provide a hands-on experience opportunity for students at NYIT.

Building Energy Modeling - Smart Energy House

This building is an off-campus building located at Farmingdale State College. The required data for energy modeling are collected through energy audit tools and wireless U-Value measuring kit. BEopt is used to develop the initial model of this two-story building. This EnergyPlus IDF file will be imported in OpenStudio for further analysis and parametric study using PAT. We are trying to achieve the following goals:

  • Calibrate the model using sensitivity analysis

  • Find an optimum energy retrofit design to achieve a zero net-energy (ZNE) building

  • Identify the data transfer issues and challenges between different energy simulation tools using BIM and IDF files.

  • Provide a hands-on experience opportunity for students at NYIT.
