The Erasmus+ KA107 mobility program
The Erasmus+ KA107 mobility program between Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) and New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) supports the exchange of students and faculty to foster international collaboration in teaching, research, and academic development. Under this agreement, since 2019, NYIT graduate students have spent multiple full semesters at POLIMI taking advanced engineering and computer science courses, while NYIT faculty participated in short-term teaching mobility at POLIMI. The program promotes joint research, co-mentorship of graduate students, curriculum internationalization, and the development of shared learning experiences in areas such as energy management, sustainability, high-performance buildings, and advanced computing. Participants receive EU funding for travel and subsistence, and their mobility activities include coursework, exams, teaching, lab visits, research reviews, and academic collaboration events.
POLIMI is a leading public scientific and technological university known for training engineers, architects, and industrial designers. The university is recognized for its strong focus on innovation, high-quality teaching, cutting-edge research, and deep collaborations with industry.

Success Story
Since spring 2020, POLIMI and CoECS have successfully performed multiple teaching and research activities funded by the Erasmus+ KA107 mobility program:
Spring 2020-2021
-
Two POLIMI graduate students — Laura Mora Dal Verme and Piergiorgio Scatigna completed part of their integrated Bachelor+Master program at NYIT, taking ENGY 718 High-Performance Building Envelopes, and conducting master’s thesis research at the EnTech Lab on building energy modeling, automated LCA workflows, and climate-resilient design under joint POLIMI–NYIT supervision [blog post]. Joint POLIMI–NYIT faculty team and POLIMI students co-authored a journal paper on biomaterials, embodied carbon, and building energy.
-
Two POLIMI faculty (Drs. Giuliana Iannaccone and Graziano Salvalai) visited NYIT and delivered a research seminar at NYIT on energy and sustainability.
Spring 2022
-
Two NYIT students (Nikhil Ramesh Vatyani & Nandita Singh) spent a semester at POLIMI, taking Computer Security, Computing Infrastructures, and Machine Learning.
-
A faculty member (Dr. Giuliana Iannaccone) and staff (Ms. Claudia Suardi, Erasmus Office) from POLIMI visited NYIT for 7 days, funded by the program, to meet with the Dean's Office, students, and cultural exchange. NYIT faculty Dr. Ehsan Kamel (teaching mobility, 16 hours) and two NYIT staff members from the Experiential Education office (Amy Bravo and Adrienne McNally) visited POLIMI for academic and administrative collaboration.
Spring and Fall 2024
-
POLIMI student Mattia Bosio (Master’s in Building Engineering & Architecture) spent the semester at NYIT, completing Geotechnical Engineering (CENG 360), Construction Engineering Senior Design (CENG 470), Alternative Energy Systems (ENGY 775), and Mechanical & Electrical Systems in Buildings (CENG 320). NYIT student Edwin Barrera (MS Data Science) studied at POLIMI Milan, from Feb 19 to May 31, 2024, taking Introduction to AI, Machine Learning, Systems & Methods for Big & Unstructured Data, Applied Statistics, and Thesis I.
-
A faculty member (Dr. Giuliana Iannaccone) and staff (Ms. Rosella Magni, Head of International Mobility Unit) from POLIMI visited NYIT, funded by the program, for 7 days to meet with the Experiential Education, Dean's Office, students, and cultural exchange.
Spring 2025
-
NYIT → POLIMI: Michelle Anastacia Guada Arwa spent the semester in Milan (Feb–Jul 2025), completing Diversity Aware Design of Technology Solutions, Energy Economics, and Social Shaping of Technology, funded through Erasmus+ KA171. POLIMI → NYIT: Ilaria Compagnoni spent the semester in New York (Jan–May 2025), taking courses on Design of Structures, Energy Efficient Buildings, followed by her Master's thesis on Thermal Analysis of Building Envelope for Extraterrestrial Habitats, which resulted in an under-progress journal paper supervised by Drs. Mainini, Kamel, and Iannacone.
-
Faculty & Staff Mobility: Dr. Ehsan Kamel (NYIT) completed a 14-day Erasmus+ KA171 teaching mobility at POLIMI, and Dr. Andrea Mainini (POLIMI) delivered a research seminar at NYIT on building envelope performance and user-centered design. Two CoECS staff members from the Dean's Office and Research (Ms. Jane Polizi and Ms. Nadia Aslam) visited POLIMI and met with the administration to enhance the program.
Spring 2026-2028:
-
The new Erasmus+ KA171 agreement (valid for the 2026–2027 calls through 31 July 2028) supports 2 NYIT→PoliMi MSc students for 3 months and 2 PoliMi→NYIT MSc students for 5 months, plus one 13-day staff/faculty visit per institution. The available funds are for partial traveling, lodging, and living expenses (€1,188 travel grant + €900/month for 3 months).
